Skis make for one-of-a-kind chairs.
Written by The Providence Journal, June 2nd, 2012.

But once you consider his background, it’s easy to understand why Brian Amaral is drawn to it.  “I have a lot of fun with it,” Amaral says of his pastime-turned-business, Water Ski Adirondack Chairs. “It’s like a recycling project for old skis that are stuck in the attic.”  Amaral, who makes chairs, ottomans and tables out of vintage water skis, can’t get enough of the water. He grew up on Johnson’s Pond in Coventry, has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in ocean engineering from the University of Rhode Island and is now pursuing a second master’s degree there, in oceanography...

Amaral made his first chair in 2008 as a Christmas gift for a friend. That led to requests for chairs from family and friends, and about two years ago he decided to start treating the pastime as a business. He exhibited at Providence’s One Way Gallery in 2010 and at the Providence Fine Furnishings Show last fall...

...
“My ideal customer is someone who grew up water skiing. Someone who looks at old skis and says, ‘I remember those,’ or ‘here’s an old set, what can you do with it?’ ”...
